Hi Puddlepirate, as a follow on from my last post, Kings Lynn in Norfolk at that time was home to Skoda cars UK and was mostly run by Czechoslovakian staff. There were twice as many staff in the offices that was required to run the business and Special branch were keeping an eye on it as it was thought some were Soviet agents. That area of East Anglia was full of NATO air bases including the twin bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. Its fairly common knowledge that parts of the Woodbridge airfield were watched from out side the boundary by more than just local air spotters. Its also a possibility that drugs were being sold to airmen from these agents during rendezvous in the forest at night. Was the RFI a drugs/espionage bust. Having alleged Soviet agents that close to a NATO Nuclear base I guess was too close for comfort and something had to be done. Like puddlepirate, this is just a personal opinion and in no way suggests it was true as there is little evidence to back the theory.

Thanks for that, Obs. Any idea what port the cars came into? If the office was in Kings Lynn then perhaps the cars came into Kings Lynn. Odd if the over-staffed offices were in Kings Lynn but the cars arrived at Harwich or Immingham. There was an area known as 'Commie Corner' at Bentwaters, it was situated in a corner of the airfield close by a small church. If drugs were being sold to US airmen then I suspect the trade for small quantities would have been made in the pubs and clubs in and around Ipswich. If the trade was in bulk, bearing in mind there were no CCTV cameras around back then, the deal could have been done anywhere that would not attract undue attention but where a consignment could be hidden quickly. That would make the forest as good a place as any. When I lived in Watford there was a turn off from the road to Harrow that led to a spot known as Old Redding. It was a large car park on high ground overlooking Harrow and central London. At night it was very popular with courting couples who would park up to admire the view (ahem, yeah, right, of course we did ) If the tracks into Rendlesham Forest were equally as popular for the same reason but with aircraft replacing views of London, then someone driving a car onto a forest track in late evening would not attract attention. I doubt much attention would be paid to anyone watching aircraft at Commie Corner, even if someone named Ivan wearing a buttoned up and belted beige trench coat with a trilby hat pulled down over his eyes was leaning on the fence waving a camera and telephoto lens and shouting 'This way, comrade, just one more...' After all once in the air an aircraft can be seen by anyone. I sometimes visit RAF Coningsby to photograph the aircraft coming and going. There's usually several aircraft spotters lined up along the fence all with cameras but the RAF are not at all concerned. Any Soviet agent worth his or her salt would surely have been in the pubs and clubs buying drinks and/or introducing 'honey traps' to those with access to classified info. Not long after I joined the RNR in 1981, those of us in my intake were required to attend an intelligence brief. The officer giving the brief advised us with some confidence that our names, along with those of everyone else based at Northwood, would now be included on a list maintained somewhere in the depths of the Kremlin. Consequently, we should not be at all surprised if we received unsolicited approaches from nubile young ladies while travelling on the London Underground. Having been told of the stunning beauty of Eastern European babes, I spent a fortune on Circle Line tickets but to no avail )

Hi PP, yes, I was told kings Lynn port, but that doesn't mean to say Harwich/Dovercourt or other small ports that could handle cars were not used as well. Mike Bird mentioned Commie corner. as have some of my local Woodbridge school mates. However it was a favourite place for the spotters and probably less sinister than we think. I Know Old Redding well, we pass it often on our way from Harrow to Watford, lots of goings on there including an alleged 'Dogging' site but we won't go into that, the council recently filled in some really bad craters in the car park. Mike did say that there was a regular "station Bike" charging for her services in the forest at night. only Officers seemed to be her customers and there was according to another old mate an extensive 'car key' club operating in and around the married quarters, drug parties were an ingredient of the club.
Yes, spy grooming was far more subtle than we think and the Soviets were past masters, we had the same lectures in the ROC. When I was in the Met Police, we were warned by SB not to loiter in marked cars near Zenit house on the A-5 in Colindale North London as it was the Russian's main trade delegation HQ in the UK, Russian products such as cameras came to the building ready for distribution but there were dozens more Russians there than was necessary to run the business, It was under 24/7 surveillance. Drugs are far more likely to swap hands in pubs and clubs or even public toilets and at parties. However, there could have been some trading going on in the forest at night and via East Gate! Talking of Russian girls, there are loads in Harrow and very attractive blonds they are, got chatted up in my local Costa. Mike confided that most drugs came on base from flights from the US.
